In vitro fertilization & ICSI

In vitro fertilization is an Assisted Reproduction technique that consists of the union of an egg and a sperm cell in the laboratory to create embryos that will result in a pregnancy.

During the process, the patient must take a series of medications to produce an adequate number of mature eggs. The doctor at UR Managua will provide you with information on the day that these eggs will be extracted by means of a simple procedure and with no injuries to the abdomen.

In order to perform the procedure, we will require the patient to come with an accompanying family member and perform a preanesthetic assessment, as she will enter our procedure room for sedation (vein anesthesia). Once the eggs are extracted, they will be fertilized with the semen from the couple or from a donor (if this is the case) in our laboratory, they will be incubated for a certain period of time (3 – 5 days), where your embryos will be monitored for quality and specific characteristics.

On the day of the embryos transfer (fertilized eggs), the three best embryos will be selected and placed in the uterine cavity. During this procedure, the patient will not require additional anesthesia, so she will remain awake at all times.

Once the transfer has been made, the patient will receive an instruction sheet indicating the steps to follow and the day that the blood pregnancy test will be performed.

The embryos not used, but viable, are frozen for later transfer in another cycle. If you need semen from a donor, UR Managua guarantees that the donors are of legal age, anonymous and selected according to the physical characteristics of the person requesting it. In addition, donors undergo an exhaustive study to rule out any congenital pathology or sexually transmitted disease.

The success rate of in vitro fertilization is conditioned to a large extent by the age of the woman, the ovarian response, the quality of the semen sample, as well as by the development of the embryos. The pregnancy rate per cycle ranges between 40% and 65%, although in patients under 35 this figure exceeds the 70%.
