A healthy diet and weight help in your baby’s conception and in his healthy development

The specialists of the Reproduction Unit Managua suggest a fertility study if gestation is not achieved after one year of regular intercourse and in the case of advanced age, it is recommended after six months

Do you plan on having a baby and starting a family? On World Health Day, specialists from the International UR Group of Reproductive Units provide you with advice so that your baby has a healthy start, even before conception.

Taking folic acid is essential when you want to get pregnant, as it helps prevent abnormalities in the baby’s neural tube, such as spina bifida. Ideally, you should start taking it three months before trying to conceive your baby and continue to do so during the first three months of pregnancy.

Folic acid is present in many food products included in a healthy diet such as cereals, legumes, vegetables or orange juice; however, it is difficult to achieve the necessary levels with their intake alone. Maintaining an adequate level of vitamin D and iron is also highly recommended.

Keeping a healthy diet means eating regularly, eating balanced meals, eating large amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables, and reducing processed foods and fast food. It is recommended to include carbohydrates (wholemeal bread, pasta, rice and cereals); fruit and vegetables; proteins (fish, eggs, legumes); milk and dairy products that contain calcium, essential for the development of bones; and vegetable fats (olive oil, fatty fish such as salmon, herring or mackerel).

There are other foods to avoid, such as raw eggs that may contain salmonella; undercooked meat or seafood that can cause food poisoning; unpasteurized dairy products; liver that may contain listeria and cause spontaneous miscarriage or intrauterine death; liver products with high levels of vitamin A and are harmful to the developing baby; vitamin supplements without a label indicating that they can be taken during pregnancy, as an excess intake of vitamins has very harmful effects on the fetus.

Good physical health also means being in good shape and having an adequate weight, as pregnancy will overload your body and a good physical condition will help you stay active, improve your mood and your energy levels. Having a healthy weight will help you conceive your baby, which is why it is important to reach an ideal weight before trying to get pregnant.

What do you do if the pregnancy isn’t happening?

About 10 percent of reproductive-age couples in Spain have difficulty conceiving. It is recommended to consult a specialist and start a basic infertility study in young couples who do not achieve pregnancy after one year of regular unprotected intercourse. In the case of advanced age, it is advisable to carry out the studies after six months, as time can be a key factor in achieving the desired pregnancy.

“Almost 90 percent of couples with infertility problems can be successfully treated, although the percentages vary from case to case, since a couple can suffer multiple problems,” explains Dr. Germán Fernández, medical director of the Reproduction Unit Managua.
