The medical director of the UR Managua explains that the age of the father can affect the fertility and gestation of the children

Doctor Germán Fernández assures that from the age of 40-45 the possibilities of chromosomal alterations and aneuploidies in the sperm cells increase.

In today’s society we know how important age is for women when conceiving children, however, the man also has a biological clock, and although to a lesser extent, his age also affects the fertility and the gestation of children.

The aging of the male reproductive system can produce changes in the seminogram and cause lesions in the DNA of the sperm cells. “Although the sperm cells factory (spermatogenesis) continues to function throughout a man’s life, the capacity of its gametes drops, and from the ages of 40-45 the possibility of chromosomal alterations and aneuploidies in the sperm cells increase. It can lead to difficulties in achieving gestation or that pregnancy leads to the birth of a healthy child,” says Dr. Germán Fernández, Medical Director of the Reproduction Unit of Managua.

The specialist points out that in the study of men, not only are the data provided by a conventional seminogram (count, motility, morphology and sperm vitality) important, but there are other tests such as DNA fragmentation or FISH of sperm cells which help us to perform a complete assessment of the fertilizing capacity of the sperm cell.

In addition, Dr Fernández points out that in elderly parents, “when any of these tests confirm the presence of alterations, the PGT-A (Preimplantation Genetic Test Aneuploid) is fundamental for the genetic study of embryos resulting from an in vitro fertilization (IVF) and the selection of those that are healthy, free of chromosomal alterations, in order to transfer them to the mother’s uterus to achieve an ongoing pregnancy and a healthy baby back home.”

Once the affected male factor has been identified through a FISH study, specialists from the department of Clinical Genetics then apply the PGT-A, analyzing the chromosomes of each embryo through the powerful and innovative mass sequence technology that allows the selection of chromosomally normal embryos and increases pregnancy rates.
